Main Terminal and the New Transport Interchange

Bristol Airport has just one terminal, which keeps navigation simple. The big change in recent years is the Transport Interchange (PTI), which opened on 16 July 2025 as part of a £60 million project inside the airport’s wider £400 million transformation programme.

Here is what changed and why it matters if you have not flown from Bristol since:

  • The Interchange sits on top of a new four storey car park, directly opposite the terminal, and has 16 bus and coach bays, up from 5 previously.
  • Every route now has its own dedicated bay, a covered waiting area, and live departure screens.
  • A covered bridge links the top of the car park straight into the terminal forecourt, so the walk in from buses, coaches or the car park is under cover the whole way.
  • General car drop off and pick up now happens on the top level of this car park, not outside the terminal doors.
  • The old “Drop and Go” area beside the terminal is now reserved for minibuses and over height vehicles only.
  • There is a Marks & Spencer Food store, new washrooms, seating, flight information screens and passenger assistance touch points inside the Interchange itself.

If an old blog post or your sat nav history tells you to pull up right outside the terminal, ignore it. That option does not exist anymore for a standard car.

Arrivals and Departures

The airport publishes live arrivals and departures boards on its website, showing scheduled and expected times, the airline, flight number and any notes (landed, delayed, estimated time). It is worth checking this before you leave home to collect someone, and again before you set off to catch a flight yourself, since flights can move in both directions.

If you are meeting someone

  1. Check the live arrivals board for their flight before leaving home.
  2. UK and eligible passport holders generally use the ePassport gates at passport control, which is faster than a staffed desk.
  3. Baggage reclaim follows passport control. Allow at least 20 to 30 minutes after landing before bags start coming through, longer on a full flight.
  4. Passengers then walk out through the Arrivals Hall and across the covered bridge into the Transport Interchange or car park.
  5. If you are driving, wait in the free Waiting Zone (more on that below) until you hear from them, then move to the Drop Off and Pick Up car park.

Getting To and From Bristol Airport

There are more ways to reach Bristol Airport than most people realise, and the airport publishes exact fares and frequencies for most of them.

By Airport Flyer bus

The Flyer network is the airport’s own branded bus service, connecting the terminal to Bristol, Bath, Weston super Mare and Portishead.

National Express, Megabus and Flixbus also run wider UK networks that connect into the airport via the A1 Flyer or the South West Falcon, through Bristol Bus Station or Bond Street.

Traveling to and from Bristol Airport By rail

Bristol Airport is not on the rail network itself. The nearest station is Bristol Temple Meads, reached by the A1 Flyer, and the A3 Weston Airport Flyer connects to Worle station. Great Western Railway lets you book a combined rail and Flyer ticket by selecting “Bristol Airport (A1 Bristol)” or “Bristol Airport (A3 Weston)” as your station when booking through GWR.com. Trainline offers a similar combined ticket if you just set your destination as “Bristol Airport (Any)”.

Traveling to and from Bristol Airport By taxi

Zoom Cars holds the official on site taxi partnership with Bristol Airport. Their dedicated taxi office sits on the forecourt between the Transport Interchange and the terminal, and their fleet includes hybrid and electric vehicles, with a target of a fully electric fleet by 2030. You can book Bristol airport transfers online. After booking, head to the Drop Off and Pick Up car park on the top level of the Transport Interchange, where dedicated Zoom Cars bays sit right by the entrance doors.

For journeys further afield, a prebooked private transfer is often the more practical choice, particularly to Bath, Cardiff, Weston super Mare or towns across Somerset and South Wales, where a fixed price agreed in advance removes any surprises.

Traveling to and from Bristol Airport By car

  • From the north on the M5, leave at Junction 18 and follow signs for the A4 and A370 towards the airport. Note that this route passes through Bristol’s Clean Air Zone, which carries charges for some older vehicles.
  • From the south on the M5, leave at Junction 22 and follow the A38.
  • From the M4 heading west, join the M5 southbound at Junction 20, then leave at Junction 18 as above.
  • From Bath, follow the A4 towards Bristol, then bear onto the A4174.
  • From South Wales, cross the Severn on the M4, join the M49 at Junction 22, then follow the A4 and A370.

Different car parks use different postcodes for satnav, so check which one applies before you set off (Silver Zone is BS48 3DW, Short Stay is BS48 3AQ, everything else is BS48 3DY).

Parking at Bristol Airport

Bristol Airport publishes gate prices directly, and these are correct as of 13 August 2026 according to the airport’s own pricing page, so treat them as a guide and check the live prices before booking, since they do change. Pre booking online is almost always cheaper than turning up and paying at the gate.

The free Waiting Zone

If you are collecting someone and want to avoid paying anything while you wait, use the Waiting Zone near the Car Rental Centre. It is free for the first hour, then £20 per hour after that, with a strict no return policy within 30 minutes (the same vehicle coming back inside 30 minutes gets an automatic penalty notice). A frequent shuttle runs from here to the Transport Interchange.

Red Routes and no stopping zones

Bristol Airport enforces Red Routes and a no stopping policy across its road network. You cannot stop, unload or park on these roads, even briefly, even to drop someone off. Vehicles caught doing so face a £100 enforcement charge, reduced to £60 if paid within 14 days. Use the proper car parks instead, whatever the temptation to just pull over for thirty seconds.

Blue Badge and Special Assistance

Bristol Airport handles a genuinely large number of passengers needing extra support, and the systems reflect that.

  • Blue Badge holders get 40 minutes of parking in the Drop Off and Pick Up car park for a reduced £8.50. Scan the badge barcode at the exit barrier.
  • Family and friends dropping off a Blue Badge holder can use the same reduced rate, even if the badge itself travels onward with the passenger (press the help button on the barrier if this applies to you).
  • Dedicated Blue Badge bays are marked in Silver Zone, next to reception, and in the Multi Storey Car Park.
  • An assistance help point sits next to the Transport Interchange entrance.
  • Book assistance through your airline at least 48 hours before you fly for the best experience.
  • Self assist wheelchairs are available throughout the terminal, including near the check in hall and departure lounge, so you can move independently rather than wait for an escort.
  • A Sensory Room is available in the Departure Lounge, an interactive space for passengers who need a calmer environment before flying.
  • Hidden Disabilities lanyards are available for anyone with a non visible condition who wants staff to be aware without having to explain.
  • Assistance dogs are supported, with guidance available on the airport’s site for anyone travelling with one.
  • A changing places facility is located in the terminal building near the Arrivals Hall.

Check In and Baggage

Bristol Airport recommends arriving in the terminal at least two hours before your scheduled departure. If you are parking on site, build in extra time to get to the terminal on top of that, and if you are using Silver Zone specifically, allow time to drop your keys and catch the shuttle bus, which runs roughly every 15 minutes and takes about 10 minutes, more in heavy traffic.

Most airlines now push online check in and self service bag drop. easyJet, Ryanair, TUI and Jet2.com all operate their own bag drop kiosks in the terminal. If you have checked in online, have a printed or digital boarding pass, and no bags to check, you can walk straight to security.

Twilight Bag Drop is worth knowing about if you have an early flight. Jet2.com, Jet2holidays, easyJet and TUI let you drop hold bags the evening before, saving time the next morning. Check exact times with your airline.

One easy mistake to avoid: never pack vapes or power banks in checked luggage. They must stay with you in the cabin, since they can overheat and cause a fire in the hold.

Security

Security at Bristol Airport now runs on newer CT style scanners, and the rules are more relaxed than a few years ago:

  • Liquids can be carried up to 2 litres per container, and no longer need to go in a clear plastic bag.
  • Laptops and other electronics can generally stay in your bag rather than being placed in a separate tray.
  • Metal drinks bottles need to be emptied and carried through empty.
  • Medicines needed for your flight, plus a reasonable amount to cover delays, are allowed; anything over 2 litres in liquid, gel or aerosol form needs to be declared separately with supporting documentation such as a prescription label.
  • Children under 1 metre tall, or unable to hold the scanner position, are hand searched rather than scanned.
  • Pushchairs, buggies and car seats always go through a hand search rather than the x ray.
  • Wrapped gifts may need to be opened for inspection, so it is safer to pack them in hold luggage. Christmas crackers are not permitted in hand luggage at all.

Security Central Search closes after the last scheduled departure each day, so if your evening flight is delayed, still arrive based on the original scheduled time, not the new one.

Fast Track Security

Priced from £7 per person. Before 8am, Fast Track passengers use a dedicated channel; after 8am, it becomes a priority lane within Central Search rather than a separate channel. It speeds things up but does not guarantee a specific queue time. Children under 2 travel free and do not need a ticket; everyone aged 2 and over does.

Shopping, Eating and Relaxing

Before security: WHSmith and an M&S Food store, plus Caffè Nero, Burger King and Starbucks for something to eat.

After security: World Duty Free, InMotion, Boots, JD, WHSmith, The Bookshop, Accessorize and curi.o.city for shopping, plus Alembic, Brigg & Stow Bar and Kitchen, Burger King, Frankie & Benny’s, Cabin, Soho Coffee, Starbucks, Tortilla and Soul & Grain for food and drink. There is also a World Duty Free unit in Arrivals for last minute purchases on the way out.

World Duty Free offers a Reserve and Collect service, letting you order online in advance and save an extra 10 percent, then collect after security.

The Escape Lounge

Bristol Airport’s airport lounge (branded the Escape Lounge, with an Essence by Escape Lounges option for DragonPass and Priority Pass holders) sits on the mezzanine level of the Departure Lounge, open 3.30am to 7.30pm daily. Booking starts from £39.99 per person and includes freshly prepared hot and cold food, a full range of drinks, complimentary Wi-Fi, charging points and PressReader access. Infants under 35 months go free. You can stay for up to 3 hours before your scheduled departure. Groups larger than 6 need prior authorisation, and cancelling within 48 hours of your booked time incurs a £5 admin fee.

Cash and currency

Cash machines are available across the terminal, offering both Sterling and Euros. Global Exchange runs bureaux de change desks in the check in concourse and the departure lounge if you need to order or exchange currency in person.

Airport Hotels

The Hampton by Hilton sits right by the terminal, connected by a direct walkway, making it genuinely useful for very early departures or late arrivals. It offers a complimentary hot breakfast, free Wi-Fi, a fitness centre, meeting rooms and 24 hour dining. Check in is from 3pm and check out is 11am. Hotel parking itself is limited and cannot be pre booked, though the hotel offers one hour of free parking to check in and drop luggage before you move your car to one of the airport’s own car parks. Guests booked in for Special Assistance through their airline can also arrange help from the hotel through to the terminal at reception.

Where Bristol Airport Flies To

Bristol Airport serves well over 100 destinations, mostly short haul, with easyJet, Ryanair, Jet2, TUI, Aer Lingus, KLM and Loganair among the main operators, plus smaller regional carriers like Aurigny to the Channel Islands. On a typical day the departure boards show flights to destinations from Barcelona, Faro, Palma and Malaga through to Edinburgh, Belfast, Amsterdam and further afield to Antalya and Marrakesh, giving a real sense of the mix of leisure and short business routes on offer.

KLM’s Amsterdam service is worth knowing about specifically, since it connects onward to more than 160 destinations worldwide through Schiphol, useful if your dream destination is not served directly from Bristol.

Looking ahead, Discover Airlines (part of the Lufthansa Group) is set to launch twice weekly direct flights to Frankfurt from May 2027, adding another long haul connecting option via a major European hub. Exact routes and frequencies shift by season, so always check the live departures board or your airline directly rather than relying on a fixed list.

Bristol Airport for Business Travellers

A few things make a same day business trip smoother:

  • Fast Track Security if your morning meeting cannot slip, from £7 per person.
  • The Multi Storey Car Park for a same day return, since you skip a bus transfer both ways.
  • The Escape Lounge if you want somewhere quiet to work before boarding, complete with Wi-Fi and charging points.
  • A prebooked private transfer if you are heading straight from a meeting to catch a flight, so you are not hunting for parking under time pressure.

Bristol Airport for Families

  • Baby changing and a changing places facility are available near Arrivals.
  • Self assist wheelchairs and pushchair friendly routes exist throughout the terminal.
  • Infants under 35 months go free into the Escape Lounge, and children under 2 do not need a Fast Track ticket.
  • Pushchairs and car seats always get a hand search at security rather than going through the x ray, so build in a little extra time.
  • Powdered baby formula has no restrictions, and a reasonable amount of liquid baby food or formula is allowed beyond the normal liquid limit.

Bristol Airport and the Wider Region

Bristol Airport genuinely serves more than just Bristol. It is the closest airport for much of North Somerset, large parts of Somerset itself, and a good stretch of South Wales, which is why the A2, A3 and A4 Flyer routes exist at all, alongside coach links to Cardiff, Newport, Swansea and Bridgend. For travellers in Bath, Weston super Mare, Clevedon, Nailsea, Portishead, Backwell or further into Somerset towns like Wells and Frome, Bristol is usually the natural choice over travelling into Wales or further east.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I still drop someone off right outside the terminal doors?

No. Since the Transport Interchange opened in July 2025, general drop off has moved to the top level of the new car park, connected by a covered bridge.

How much liquid can I take through security now?

Up to 2 litres per container, and it no longer needs to go in a clear plastic bag.

Is there a train station at the airport itself?

No. Bristol Temple Meads is the nearest station, connected by the A1 Flyer bus.

How early should I arrive?

At least 2 hours before your scheduled departure, plus extra time if you are parking in Silver Zone or dealing with heavy traffic.

What happens if my vehicle is too tall for the main drop off car park?

Vehicles over 2.5 metres or minibuses up to 16 seats need the separate Minibus and Over Height Car Park. Coaches and larger vehicles need to book the Bus and Coach Park in advance.

Is Fast Track worth it?

It is a priority lane rather than a guaranteed short queue, and it costs from £7 per person. It tends to earn its keep most on early, busy, peak season mornings.

Can I wait for free while a flight lands?

Yes, in the Waiting Zone near the Car Rental Centre, free for the first hour, with a shuttle bus to the terminal.

Summary

Bristol Airport has changed more than most people realise since the Transport Interchange opened, and almost every “how it used to work” habit is now slightly wrong. Whether you are driving, taking a Flyer bus, or booking a transfer, knowing the current layout before you set off saves a stressful few minutes circling a car park you don’t need.

If you’d rather skip the parking tariffs and drop off zones altogether, a prebooked Bristol Airport transfer takes you straight to the terminal door, at a fixed price agreed before you travel.
